Can one gateway serve water-quality probes at several separate water bodies?
It depends on the field connection. Nearby wired probes may share a suitable gateway. Separate sites can use LoRaWAN acquisition nodes where radio coverage and a gateway backhaul are practical, or independent cellular stations where each location has suitable coverage. Compare the complete sensor, node, power and service arrangement at every site.

Put the sites on a sketch before choosing the gateway
Several probes around one facility are different from several stations on separate rivers, ponds or supply points. A site count tells you little about cable routes, radio paths or cellular coverage. Mark the locations, approximate separation, available mounting positions and access for maintenance. The central application may look the same in either arrangement, while the field hardware and installation costs differ considerably.
Review the probe and acquisition node together
A multiparameter probe may provide several values over one interface, but it still needs the correct supply, polling schedule and register mapping. Check warm-up, cleaning functions, environmental limits and cable requirements. Then choose a node that can read those values and produce the required payload. A wireless connection alone does not establish compatibility with the water-quality instrument. Include invalid-value and service-state handling so a probe being cleaned is not mistaken for a sudden water event.
Use LoRaWAN when the shared infrastructure is practical
A LoRaWAN arrangement needs compatible acquisition nodes, a suitable gateway position, gateway power and a route from the network server to the application. Review coverage at the actual probe locations, including terrain and obstructions. Payload size and reporting frequency belong in the network review. If the gateway loses backhaul, establish where readings are stored and which records can be recovered. The radio network and application need an agreed decoder and site mapping.
Use cellular stations when independent uplinks fit the sites
Individual 4G stations can avoid dependence on one shared radio gateway, but every station needs a suitable modem, antenna, SIM and data plan. Check coverage at the installation point rather than relying only on a regional map. Include modem activity in the energy budget. A dispersed project also needs a practical method for configuring and servicing multiple units. Record which account pays for connectivity and how a failed SIM or exhausted data allowance is detected.
Compare recurring work as well as the equipment price
Probe cleaning, calibration checks, battery service and site visits may matter more than a small difference in the gateway cost. Make one service row per location, with the access method, owner and expected work. Review whether the chosen probe supports the maintenance process the team can carry out. For a phased budget, compare reducing site count with reducing measured parameters; they change the usefulness of the study in different ways.
- Keep the required parameters tied to the study or operating question.
- Separate probe service from network maintenance.
- List SIM, platform and local servicing costs alongside the hardware.
Trial the difficult site and the data export
Choose a first location that exercises the main constraint: weak coverage, limited power or difficult access. Verify the values, units, timestamps and station identity from probe to application. Check a connection outage and service visit, then export the data the project will actually use. Send the site sketch, required parameters, intervals and available power so the network choice can be made with the complete station scope.
| Site arrangement | Configuration to review |
|---|---|
| Nearby probes with feasible cable routes | Wired acquisition and a shared uplink |
| Separated sites within usable radio coverage | LoRaWAN nodes, central gateway and backhaul |
| Separated sites with suitable cellular service | Independent 4G nodes and per-site connectivity |
| Difficult access or frequent probe fouling | Maintenance method and local service responsibilities |
Common questions
Does one dashboard mean there is only one gateway?
No. An application can combine records from several independent gateways or stations. Site identity and integration rules keep their data organized.
Can we add stations later?
Plan for expansion in the device registry, network, application and service arrangement. Confirm capacity and recurring costs before relying on a larger rollout.
